{"id":2716,"date":"2013-09-29T10:27:06","date_gmt":"2013-09-29T10:27:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/paulkagame.com\/_test_&#038;web\/?p=2716"},"modified":"2017-07-16T22:08:20","modified_gmt":"2017-07-16T22:08:20","slug":"we-have-chosen-our-own-path-to-development-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/paulkagame.rw\/2025\/?p=2716","title":{"rendered":"We have chosen our own path to development"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n<p><strong>Toronto, 28 September 2013<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Over three thousands Rwandans and Friends of Rwanda gathered to welcome President Kagame to Toronto for the fifth edition of Rwanda Day.<\/p>\n<p>Addressing the cheering crowd, President Kagame thanked those present and began by challenging Rwandans to define the kind of Rwandan they aimed to become:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe must ask ourselves what kind of Rwandan we want to be. We believe in being Rwandans defined by dignity in a safe and prosperous nation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>President Kagame pointed to the existing bias amongst those who continue to equate Africa with failure and emphasized the need for Rwanda to determine its own path:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThose who are surprised by Rwanda\u2019s achievements believe success is an anomaly for African nations. They believe African nations must follow a path defined by others. Rwanda did not choose the path of development to win a prize. We do not choose to fight corruption to please others. We have chosen this path for ourselves because we believe in doing the best for all Rwandans.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: .0001pt; line-height: normal;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11.5pt; font-family: 'Cambria','serif'; mso-ascii-theme-font: major-latin; mso-fareast-font-family: 'Times New Roman'; mso-hansi-theme-font: major-latin; mso-bidi-font-family: 'Times New Roman';\">Pointing to Rwanda\u2019s economic achievements in the past decades, President Kagame called on all present to continue contributing towards progress:<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: .0001pt; line-height: normal;\"><em><span style=\"font-size: 11.5pt; font-family: 'Cambria','serif'; mso-ascii-theme-font: major-latin; mso-fareast-font-family: 'Times New Roman'; mso-hansi-theme-font: major-latin; mso-bidi-font-family: 'Times New Roman';\">\u201cRwanda is each of you. Its future is our collective responsibility.\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: .0001pt; line-height: normal;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11.5pt; font-family: 'Cambria','serif'; mso-ascii-theme-font: major-latin; mso-fareast-font-family: 'Times New Roman'; mso-hansi-theme-font: major-latin; mso-bidi-font-family: 'Times New Roman';\">Themed Agaciro: Investing in our future, the fifth edition of Rwanda Day took place in the city of Toronto.
